Prime Contractor

Toronto Research Chemicals Inc. manufactures and supplies complex organic small molecules that are not otherwise commercially available. The company’s expanding product lines include unique and highly specialized chemicals for drug development, and medical and biochemical research.

Production Laboratories

Engaged by Toronto Research Chemicals, Allyant was the prime contractor for the retrofit of an existing industrial manufacturing building into several production laboratories. The retrofit consisted of the demolition of a portion of the existing building and the construction of 10,000 sf of new laboratory spaces, all built to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). New mechanical and electrical services were provided with sub-feed to existing laboratories. Additional features of the facility included new water, fire water, sanitary and stormwater services, state-of-the-art energy efficiency lighting and communications, high-quality durable finishes, anti-fungal and moisture resistant drywall, and stainless-steel furniture and equipment. The laboratories house bench top mounted fume hoods and walk-in fume hoods with associated make up and exhaust air systems, using high efficiency variable volume controls and devices to optimize energy conservation.

Solvent Storage & IT Room

Allyant also worked with TRC for the much-needed construction of an IT room and solvent storage area at an adjacent facility. Both spaces were fit out to include epoxy floor finishes. The IT room features new recessed LED lighting with a local on / off switch, as well as a split air conditioning system with a wall mounted evaporator and accompanying roof mounted condenser with interconnecting refrigerant piping. The solvent storage room was equipped with anti-fungal and fire-rated drywall, and customized mechanical and electrical systems to provide the required clean and precise temperature and humidity-controlled environments.

North Expansion

To improve and expand the functions of their facilities in North York, Ontario, Toronto Research Chemicals retained Allyant in a construction management capacity to repurpose an existing building to support the laboratory operations in adjacent buildings. The scope of work for the $3.7M project comprised the fit-out of 12,000 sf of support space, including the construction of an analytical laboratory, manual weighing room, workshop, administration area, picking and sorting area, and central freezer and refrigerators. Covered links were created to connect the adjacent buildings, facilitating the flow of people and materials. For continuity of appearance, minor upgrades were made to the exterior envelope. The project was completed in 2021.
